What happened

The City of Iqaluit says road-improvement work on parts of Pingua Street and Qaqqaliaq Street will begin Thursday, Aug. 13. Granular work is scheduled for Aug. 13–22, followed by paving anticipated Aug. 23–25 and final ditch and drainage work Sept. 1–3.

The work will be completed in phases generally lasting one or two days each, subject to weather and site conditions. The City has published maps showing closures, detours and temporary resident parking for affected phases. SourceCity of Iqaluit↗

Why it matters

For Plateau residents, the project responds to years of calls to pave these streets. Large summer dust clouds from unpaved roads have been a persistent hassle, and many people are looking forward to a paved surface.

The phased construction plan, including mapped detours and temporary parking, gives residents a clearer way to plan around the work and reflects better organization by the City for a project affecting daily travel and driveway access.

Paving will reduce the need for ongoing road grading, an expensive municipal task, helping save future maintenance funds and capacity. The City’s approved 2026 capital budget includes $9.75 million for drainage and roadway improvements across Iqaluit, though it does not list a separate Pingua–Qaqqaliaq project amount. Residents in affected phases should check the City’s construction maps, move vehicles before crews begin work when travelling during the day, and follow posted signs and traffic-control directions. The City says driveway access may be temporarily unavailable while crews work, generally between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Paving is currently expected Aug. 23–25, followed by ditch and drainage work Sept. 1–3; the schedule may change with weather or site conditions.
