NTI says it allocated $4.14M for Nunavut school food programs
Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated says its board allocated $4.14 million in federal National School Food Program funding for the 2026–27 school year. NTI says the money will be delivered through the Coalition of Nunavut District Education Authorities and distributed by student enrolment to help schools provide meals and snacks. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

NTI says its board made the allocation during an August meeting in Baker Lake. The organization did not publish a school-by-school breakdown, a payment schedule or the amount each District Education Authority will receive. Canada’s published Nunavut action plan lists $2.63 million in 2026–27 federal program funding before any permitted carry-forward from the previous year. It does not explain how that amount relates to NTI’s stated $4.14-million allocation. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

All 45 Nunavut schools report having a school meal program, according to Nunavut’s federal action plan. The plan says 2026–27 work includes continued school food delivery, country-food access, staff training and kitchen upgrades. The announced allocation could affect what food programs can offer during the current school year, but the local distribution remains publically unclear. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

Atiilu News Desk should seek the allocation formula, the amount going to each school or District Education Authority, confirmation of whether carry-forward funding accounts for the difference between NTI’s figure and Canada’s published annual allocation, and when schools receive the funds.

The same NTI board release says directors directed staff to continue examining an Inuit child-and-family-services role under Bill C-92, including potential registration as an Indigenous governing body. That is exploratory work, not an approved transfer of child-welfare authority. The board also nominated Elizabeth Copland to the Nunavut Water Board and Petula Panigoniak-Anautak to the Nunavut Impact Review Board, and appointed Victor Tootoo as election commissioner for the 2026 NTI vice-presidential election. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗
