Ottawa commits $85.5M for Rankin Inlet Airport runway and taxiway rehabilitation
The federal government announced $85.5 million on Sept. 28 to rehabilitate pavement at Rankin Inlet Airport, including its runway, taxiways and apron. The announcement came during the official opening of the new terminal, which had already begun handling flights in June. No construction schedule, contractor or tender has been announced.

Transport Canada says the Arctic Infrastructure Fund commitment will support rehabilitation of about 141,000 square metres of airfield pavement, including Runway 13-31, Taxiways A and C, and associated apron surfaces. Ottawa says the work is intended to improve safety, reliability and capacity, extend the airfield's service life by 15 to 20 years, and reduce long-term maintenance needs. The new terminal building was officially opened Sept. 28, but Government of Nunavut records show airline check-in, arrivals and departures moved into it on June 23.

Rankin Inlet is a major Kivalliq air link for passenger travel, cargo, food and medical supplies, medevac service and regional connections. The newly announced money is a public funding commitment for the airport's airfield, rather than funding for the terminal itself. Transport Canada also describes the airport upgrades as dual-use civilian and defence infrastructure.

The federal announcement does not give a construction start or completion date, procurement schedule, contractor, final project cost or details of how airport operations will be managed during rehabilitation. Those details should be monitored before reporting the work as underway.

The terminal was supported by nearly $63.5 million through the National Trade Corridors Fund, according to Transport Canada. The new $85.5-million announcement is through the separate Arctic Infrastructure Fund. A National Defence contribution record also lists $4.62 million for Government of Nunavut design work on major runway resurfacing between April 10, 2026 and March 31, 2027; it does not establish that physical rehabilitation work has begun.
