The Government of Nunavut’s 2026–30 business plan lists instructional support for the Nunavut curriculum and related assessments in Grades 2 and 3 this school year. Official spill file records 200-litre fuel release from marine vessel in Baker Lake
A public spill record lists a 200-litre petroleum-fuel release from a marine vessel in Baker Lake, reported at 6:52 a.m. on Aug. 25. The file lists the Canadian Coast Guard/Transport Canada marine-safety unit as lead agency, an unknown cause and 1,500 square metres of affected area. City says RCMP found no criminal activity in Aug. 24 animal-control incident; municipal review pending
The City of Iqaluit says the RCMP investigation into the reported Aug. 24 dog-attack incident found no criminal activity. More than 350 personnel join Resolute Bay Operation NANOOK-NUNAKPUT through Sept. 25
The Canadian Armed Forces says Operation NANOOK-NUNAKPUT is underway in and around Resolute Bay until Sept. 25, involving more than 350 personnel including Canadian Rangers. The operation adds surveillance, mobility and heavy-equipment activities, plus public events on Sept. 4 and 5. Canadian North flight attendants begin federal conciliation process after talks stall
Canadian North flight attendants represented by CUPE Local 8111 have filed a Notice of Dispute, beginning the federal conciliation process after contract bargaining that began in March did not resolve wage, unpaid-work, working-condition and scheduling issues. Coast Guard says Iqaluit MCTS VHF Channel 16 service at Churchill is off air
The Canadian Coast Guard has issued a navigation warning that the Iqaluit Marine Communications and Traffic Services receive service on VHF radio Channel 16 at Churchill, Manitoba, has been off air since Aug. 23. The warning does not say that all Iqaluit MCTS communications are unavailable or give a restoration time.
Iqaluit sets Sept. 5 Mass Registration to help families find winter activities
The City of Iqaluit says its 2026 Mass Registration will run Saturday, Sept. 5, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Iqaluit Curling Rink. The annual event gives families one place to meet local sports, non-profit and community groups and sign up for the winter season. Organizations that want a table are asked to email the City with their name and contact information.
Permafrost survey to bring brief delays and noise in Iqaluit from Aug. 25 to Sept. 4
Tetra Tech Canada is scheduled to conduct a non-invasive permafrost ground survey in public areas of Iqaluit from Aug. 25 to Sept. 4. The City says people may see workers, equipment pulled along roads and sledgehammer data collection; minor traffic delays are possible, but no lane closures are planned. NIRB screening remains active for Pond Inlet Arctic Char stock assessment
The Nunavut Impact Review Board’s file for Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s proposed Pond Inlet Arctic Char Stock Assessment remains in active screening. The proposed 2026 work would collect biological and catch data at Tuniit and Satuut with Pond Inlet residents, intended to inform a future stock-status update; it is not a decision on harvest levels or approval of a fishery change. Two Operation NANOOK activities are underway in Nunavut, with Resolute Bay assessments planned
Two Canadian Armed Forces Operation NANOOK activities are underway in the Arctic. Operation NANOOK-QIMAAVIVUT runs from July through September and includes engineering reconnaissance and infrastructure assessments near Resolute Bay; Operation NANOOK-TUUGAALIK runs from August through October, with maritime patrols, surveillance, refuelling and community engagement across the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Iqaluit landfill metal disposal area remains closed until further notice

Nunavut backs Arviat seabed-mapping request, but no federal project approval is confirmed
Nunavut’s Transportation and Infrastructure minister says the territory supports Aqqiumavvik Society’s proposed seabed-mapping work near Arviat and that the Canadian Hydrographic Service has sent the request for review against planned programs. The available public record does not confirm federal funding, a mapping contract or a start date.
KFC moves into Northmart as Pizza Hut service ends at Nipisa Street site
KFC has moved from the former KFC/Pizza Hut operation at 159 Nipisa Street into Iqaluit’s main Northmart store beside Tim Hortons. The separate Pizza Hut offering has ended, while Northmart plans to sell pizzas through its bakery and food counter. The change keeps KFC available but removes a branded pizza takeout option in a city with limited choices. Embrace Life Council is registering adults for its first Embrace Life Polar Dip, planned for Apex Beach in Iqaluit on Thursday, Sept. 17. Amautiit invites survivors to report barriers in accessing violence-response services
Amautiit Nunavut Inuit Women’s Association is seeking confidential survey responses from people with experience of intimate partner, domestic or family violence. The survey asks about accessing shelters, policing, evidence collection and the justice system, and says the results will be used to identify service gaps and develop future resources.
Qajuqturvik says Iqaluit community-meal demand rose sharply in June and July
Qajuqturvik Community Food Centre says it served an average of 481 meals a day in June and July, and reports a 35 per cent summer increase in demand for its daily meals. The figures point to increased pressure on a core free-meal service, but the organization has not published its underlying counts or comparison method.
Iqaluit pool scheduled to reopen Sunday, but August programming remains reduced
The City of Iqaluit says the Aquatic Centre pool is scheduled to reopen Sunday, Aug. 16, after annual maintenance. Aquafit will not run for the rest of August and the 6:30–8 a.m. lane swim is cancelled because of staffing shortages; the City also warns that swim schedules or capacity may change on short notice. Nunavut Quits is directing people seeking help to reduce or quit smoking, chewing or vaping to text “NUQUITS” to 123456 or call 1-866-368-7848. The Government of Nunavut service says Quitline coaching is free, confidential and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Baffin Island caribou harvest rises to 6,000 tags for 2026–27
Nunavut says the Baffin Island caribou total allowable harvest has increased immediately from 550 to 6,000 tags for the season ending June 30, 2027. Hunters still need an allocation from their local Hunters and Trappers Organization, and must report harvested animals.
Car wash Saturday to support Iqaluit Firefighters Association
Iqaluit residents can have their vehicles washed Saturday, Aug. 15, with proceeds supporting the Iqaluit Firefighters Association. The poster lists prices of $25 per car and $35 per truck, with the event running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Plateau remains under emergency water shutdown and boil-water advisory, City says
The City of Iqaluit issued an August 12 notice saying an emergency water shutdown and precautionary boil-water advisory are in effect for Plateau. The City said crews were addressing an urgent water-infrastructure issue and expected to restore water around 6 p.m., but the notice does not identify affected streets or addresses.
QEC fined $276,000 after guilty plea over 2024 worker death at Naujaat power plant
Qulliq Energy Corporation pleaded guilty in the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit on June 16 to one Safety Act offence connected to the July 5, 2024 death of a QEC electrician at the Naujaat Power Plant. The court imposed a $240,000 fine for the Workers’ Protection Fund and a $36,000 victim fine surcharge. Eight other charges were withdrawn under a plea agreement, WSCC says.
