Nunavut sets 2026 property-tax rates outside Iqaluit; payment is due 60 days after each notice
Nunavut’s Finance Department has set 2026 property-tax mill rates for properties outside Iqaluit. Residential property is taxed at 6.15 mills, while commercial and industrial property is taxed at 6.77 mills. The government said notices would be sent in late September, with payment due 60 days after the date on each notice. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

The Department of Finance announced Sept. 18 that its 2026 rates took effect Sept. 3. The listed rates are 18.00 mills for hydrocarbons, 18.24 mills for minerals, 35.72 mills for pipelines, 6.15 mills for residential property, 6.77 mills for other property including commercial and industrial uses, and zero mills for education. The government says the rates apply to properties outside Iqaluit. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

This sets a direct tax obligation for affected property owners outside Iqaluit. The payment deadline depends on the individual notice date, rather than the announcement date. The public notice does not give one territory-wide payment deadline or confirm that every notice has already been mailed.

Affected owners should check their property-tax notice when it arrives or, if it has not arrived, contact the Department of Finance. The department lists 1-800-316-3324 and propertytax@gov.nu.ca for property-tax questions. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

A mill rate is the tax rate applied to an assessed property value. The announcement is a completed rate-setting decision, not a proposed tax change. It explicitly excludes Iqaluit, so the notice does not establish Iqaluit property-tax rates.
