An extension, if granted, would give the board more time to finish this regulatory screening step before it issues its screening decision. It does not authorize construction, issue permits or decide whether the hydro project will proceed.

The responsible minister must decide whether to grant the extension. NIRB’s public dashboard had not posted a ministerial response or screening decision as of Sept. 23, 2026. The proposed project is an Inuit-led hydroelectric development on the Kuugaluk River system on Hall Peninsula, with a planned capacity of up to 30 megawatts, roughly 66 kilometres of access road and transmission line, and a new substation near Iqaluit, according to NIRB’s project summary. Those remain project proposals, not approved works.
