Iqaluit landfill metal disposal area remains closed until further notice

ᓇᐃᓈᕐᓗᒍ

Iqaluit’s landfill remains open for regular waste, but its metal disposal area is closed until further notice while scrap metal is removed. The City says residents must not enter or use the metal area because heavy equipment and trucks are operating there. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ

The City of Iqaluit issued the closure notice on Aug. 18, 2026. It says the metal disposal area is temporarily unavailable for scrap-metal removal operations, while regular waste disposal continues as usual.

Residents and businesses taking metal to the landfill cannot use that area until the City issues a reopening notice. The City has identified active heavy equipment and truck traffic as the reason people should stay out of the area.

The City says it will issue another notice when the metal disposal area reopens. No reopening date or alternate metal-disposal location is provided in the current notice.

This is an active service restriction, not a permanent landfill closure. The City’s English, French and Inuktitut notices all remain listed on its current notices pages as of Aug. 21, 2026. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ
