Sakku’s $2.5M federal solar project in Rankin Inlet remains active through March 2027
Sakku Investments Corporation received a $2.5-million federal contribution for a Rankin Inlet rooftop-solar and battery demonstration project. The agreement is active until March 31, 2027, but public records do not give a construction schedule, system size or expected diesel savings. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

Natural Resources Canada announced on June 22 that Sakku Investments Corporation would receive $2.5 million for the SIC Rooftop Solar project. Canada says the project is intended to demonstrate Nunavut’s first solar-and-battery system that can operate while connected to a local microgrid and also independently, known as islanded mode. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗
The federal grants database lists Rankin Inlet as the project location. It identifies the funding as a contribution under Natural Resources Canada’s Clean Energy for Rural and Remote Communities demonstration program, with an agreement period from Oct. 29, 2025 to March 31, 2027. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

The full $2.5 million is public funding for a project meant to test whether local solar generation and batteries can displace some fossil-fuel electricity in a remote Nunavut community. Federal records say the expected results include reduced fossil-fuel use and greenhouse-gas emissions. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗
However, the award and demonstration plan do not confirm that equipment has been installed, that the system is operating, or that electricity bills will change.

Sakku and the federal government have not published a construction start date, commissioning date, solar capacity, battery capacity, participating buildings or projected diesel savings. The next useful public update would be a project-progress report, procurement notice or confirmation that the system has entered service.

The funding was publicly announced June 22, 2026, although the contribution agreement began Oct. 29, 2025. The agreement value and stated total project value are both $2.5 million in Natural Resources Canada’s current investments record. This is an approved funding contribution for an active demonstration project, not confirmation of a completed facility. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗
