Nunavut sets 2026 property-tax rates outside Iqaluit; notices to follow late September

ᓇᐃᓈᕐᓗᒍ

Nunavut has set 2026 property-tax mill rates for properties outside Iqaluit. Residential properties are set at 6.15 mills, while commercial and industrial properties fall under a 6.77-mill rate. The government says tax notices will be sent in late September and payment will be due 60 days after the notice date. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ

The Department of Finance published its 2026 property-tax rates on Sept. 18. The rates took effect Sept. 3 and apply to properties outside Iqaluit: 18.00 mills for hydrocarbons, 18.24 for minerals, 35.72 for pipelines, 6.15 for residential property and 6.77 for all other property, including commercial and industrial uses. The education rate remains zero. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ

A mill is $1 of tax for every $1,000 of assessed property value. The government has not published individual tax notices or a territory-wide total revenue estimate with this announcement. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ

Property owners outside Iqaluit will soon receive their 2026 tax bills and will have 60 days from the date on the notice to pay. The announcement does not apply to Iqaluit, which has its own municipal property-tax system. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ

The Department of Finance says it will levy the tax and mail notices in late September 2026. Owners should check the notice date carefully because that date starts the 60-day payment period. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ

For comparison, Nunavut’s 2025 rate sheet listed a single 6.15-mill rate for homes, businesses and other properties outside Iqaluit. The 2026 notice keeps the residential rate at 6.15 mills but lists commercial and industrial property within a new 6.77-mill “all other” category. A property’s actual bill also depends on its assessed value. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ
