Nunavut reports updated foster-home checks after auditor general’s review
Nunavut says 97 per cent of its 159 active foster homes had completed home studies as of Oct. 27, 2026, and 82 per cent had completed vulnerable-sector checks within standard timelines. These are government-reported figures, not new audit findings. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

The Government of Nunavut released the figures Nov. 3 in its response to the auditor general’s foster-care report. It accepted the findings and recommendations and said work remains underway on all seven recommendations. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

Home studies assess whether caregivers and their homes can meet children’s needs safely. Vulnerable-sector checks search police records for information relevant to a caregiver’s suitability. Both are basic safeguards for children placed in care. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗
The updated figures should not be read as a direct before-and-after comparison with the audit. The audit examined sampled files over a period ending March 31, 2026. It found only 52 per cent of required home studies were completed before children were placed. The government’s October update reports completed studies across active homes, without saying whether they were completed before placement. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

The Nov. 3 release gives no completion dates for the remaining work. However, the department’s responses in the full audit report include some time commitments: it says it will establish payment service standards and an implementation schedule within 12 months. That is a commitment to future work, not confirmation that the standards are in place. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

The government also says foster families received a 45 per cent pay increase, retroactive to April 1, 2026. The audit records that Cabinet approved the revised payment policy on Sept. 2, after the audit period ended. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗
