NIRB opens screening for Pond Inlet’s proposed new water-supply facility

What happened
NIRB file 26WA001 entered active screening after the proposal was accepted as complete on Aug. 18, 2026. Public commenting began Aug. 20 for the Government of Nunavut application, authorized by Pond Inlet Council, to renew and amend municipal water licence 3BM-PON2025 for a new water-supply facility.
Why it matters
The proposal would replace Pond Inlet’s existing water-supply infrastructure with a treatment building, treated-water storage and process-waste tank intended to provide 20 years of capacity based on projected population growth. It would keep Salmon Creek as the source, expand the existing raw-water reservoir to 207,462 cubic metres, and request withdrawal limits of up to 2,051 cubic metres per day and 111,803 cubic metres annually from Salmon Creek.
What happens next
The public-comment period is in progress. NIRB’s dashboard showed no end date for comments when checked Aug. 24, 2026. The Board must complete its screening before the proposal can move through the required regulatory process. The application anticipates minor civil work in late summer or fall 2026, followed by construction in 2027 and 2028 and expected commissioning around fall 2028; those are applicant plans, not confirmed approvals or completed work.
