NIRB is accepting comments on proposed three-site wilderness-lodge network
The Nunavut Impact Review Board is screening GeoNest’s proposed network of three seasonal wilderness lodges near Arctic Bay, Cunningham Bay on Prince of Wales Island, and Slidre Fiord near Eureka. The application is not an approval to build or operate. The registry still showed the file in active screening when checked Nov. 4. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

NIRB opened public commenting on Oct. 16 for the GeoNest — Nunavut Base Camps Collection proposal, a tourism project listed as active screening. The application describes three off-grid lodges, each with up to about 14 people: seven guests and seven staff. The proposed operating periods are May to September near Arctic Bay, July to September at Cunningham Bay, and March to September at Slidre Fiord. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

The proposal could affect tourism activity, wildlife viewing, aircraft access, land use and local economic opportunities in North Baffin and the Kitikmeot. GeoNest says the camps would use movable structures, renewable power backed by generators, site-based equipment, fuel storage and waste-management measures. Those are applicant claims now under environmental review, not settled conditions or approvals. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

NIRB must complete its screening before the project can move forward through the required approval processes. The board’s dashboard shows that commenting remains in progress, but its displayed page does not show the closing date. The Oct. 16 notice PDF should be checked directly before publication to confirm the exact deadline and submission instructions. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

GeoNest identifies Admiralty Inlet near Arctic Bay as the first lodge it plans to establish. Its application says fixed-wing aircraft could serve Cunningham Bay and Slidre Fiord about every seven to 10 days, while routine aircraft and helicopter operations are not proposed for Admiralty Inlet. It says helicopter use would require a further application or amendment before it began. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗
