NIRB closes screening for Cambridge Bay wastewater-treatment research pilot
The Nunavut Impact Review Board closed its screening of a University of Guelph research project that plans to test small, plant-based wastewater biofilters at the Canadian High Arctic Research Station in Cambridge Bay. The decision does not approve a community wastewater plant or a new municipal service.

NIRB issued its Screening Decision Report for file 26YN041 on Oct. 8 and marked the scientific-research file closed. The University of Guelph proposal calls for about six pilot-scale biofilters at the Canadian High Arctic Research Station, with testing planned from March 2027 to March 2028. The project record says treated water would be collected and returned to the station’s sewage holding tank, rather than discharged onto the ground. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

The work is intended to test whether native Arctic plants and filter materials could support wastewater treatment in cold conditions. It is early-stage research, not a decision to replace sewage lagoons or build a wastewater-treatment system in Cambridge Bay or another Nunavut community. Federal records show Polar Knowledge Canada provided a $200,002 contribution for the research, running to March 31, 2028. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

The NIRB registry says field deployment and monitoring are planned to begin in March 2027. The project record identifies the Nunavut Research Institute, Nunavut Water Board and the Government of Nunavut’s Environment Department as regulatory authorities. Any future community-scale system would require separate planning, approvals and funding.
