Nanisivik exploration proposal moves to response stage in NIRB screening
The Nunavut Impact Review Board says Honey Badger Silver Inc.’s proposed Nanisivik exploration program remains in active screening and moved to an “Opportunity to Respond” stage on Oct. 1. The step follows comments from the Qikiqtani Inuit Association, the Government of Nunavut and Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada; it is not approval to begin work. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

NIRB posted its Oct. 1 Opportunity to Address Comments document for file 26EN037, Nanisivik. Its project dashboard lists the screening as active and says the opportunity-to-respond stage is in progress. The registry identifies three comment submissions, from QIA, the Government of Nunavut and Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, followed by one proponent-response document.

The proposal could allow seasonal mineral exploration about 20 kilometres east of Arctic Bay, including drilling, trenching, geophysical surveys, a temporary 20-person camp if Arctic Bay accommodation is unavailable, and small remote fuel caches. The response stage is where the proponent can address concerns raised in the review before NIRB makes its screening decision.

NIRB has not yet posted a screening decision report. The project dashboard still lists “Opportunity to Respond in progress,” so the next recorded regulatory milestone is a NIRB screening decision, not authorization to conduct the proposed work.

Applicant: Honey Badger Silver Inc. NIRB file: 26EN037. Application: 126488. The proposed work is planned seasonally between March and October. The company says exact locations for any camp, trenches, drill holes and fuel caches have not yet been determined. NIRB’s dashboard records the public comment period as ending Sept. 29. Atiilu News Desk could verify the response-stage status directly, but could not independently extract the deadline stated in the downloadable Oct. 1 PDF.
