Kivalliq Inuit Association plans Dec. 14 election for five leadership roles
The Kivalliq Inuit Association’s election-services request for proposals says it plans to hold an election on Dec. 14 for vice-president, secretary-treasurer and community-director seats in Whale Cove, Rankin Inlet and Naujaat. Each office carries a four-year term. The date is described as tentative in the procurement record, and KIA has not yet posted a public nomination or voting notice. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

KIA issued a Sept. 2 request for proposals to hire a chief returning officer for its 2026 election. The document identifies five offices expected to be on the Dec. 14 ballot: KIA vice-president, secretary-treasurer, and community directors for Whale Cove, Rankin Inlet and Naujaat. The request says the chief returning officer would oversee election work across all seven Kivalliq communities.

KIA is the regional Inuit association representing more than 7,000 Inuit beneficiaries in the Kivalliq and is a designated Inuit organization under the Nunavut Agreement. The election will determine five positions involved in KIA’s governance for the next four years. Residents may need nomination, eligibility and polling details before voting, but those details were not posted in the records reviewed.

KIA’s procurement document says the election is tentatively scheduled for Dec. 14, 2026. It said a chief returning officer must be appointed at least 75 days before election day, but no public contract award or appointment notice was found. Atiilu News Desk should monitor KIA’s news and elections pages for an official election notice, candidate-nomination dates, voter eligibility information and polling arrangements.

The chief returning officer proposals closed Sept. 9. The RFP says KIA expected to accept a proposal by Sept. 18 and advise proponents within one month of closing, but it does not itself confirm that a contract was awarded. KIA’s current elections page still displays unofficial results from its Dec. 8, 2025 election rather than 2026 election instructions. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗
