Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami said Sept. 11 that its board voted in Kuujjuaq two days earlier to allocate at least $218 million in existing federal funding for Inuit priorities. The decision includes $130 million from the federal Urban, Rural and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy, to flow to Inuit through Inuit Treaty Organizations. The decision creates a new funding route for housing and Inuit-led stewardship work, including monitoring of land, water and ice, across Inuit Nunangat. Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated is one of the Inuit Treaty Organizations that directs ITK’s work, so Nunavut is included in the organizational structure through which the funding will be considered. But the announcement does not say how much will come to Nunavut, which projects will receive money, or when communities will see spending. Watch for allocation details from Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, regional Inuit associations and ITK, including any project criteria, community funding calls, spending timelines and Nunavut-specific totals.
