Iqaluit reports $879,206 general-fund surplus through March 31; land fund also showed a Q1 surplus
Iqaluit staff presented first-quarter budget-variance tables to the Governance and Priorities Committee of the Whole on Aug. 18. The tables show a $879,206 general-fund surplus through March 31, alongside surpluses of $178,156 in the land fund, $878,039 in sanitation and $4.11 million in water and sewer. What happened
The General Fund table lists $9.82 million in revenue and $8.94 million in expenditures through March 31, producing the reported $879,206 surplus. The Land Fund lists $519,455 in revenue and $341,298 in expenditures, producing a $178,156 surplus—not a deficit—for the same period. Sanitation reported $1.57 million in revenue and $688,786 in expenditures, while water and sewer reported $6.12 million in revenue and $2.01 million in expenditures. SourceCity of Iqaluit↗
Why it matters
The figures provide an early public snapshot of the City’s 2026 operating funds, including services supported by property tax, land administration, waste collection, water and sewer charges. They do not by themselves establish a year-end result: the tables compare budget figures with actual results recorded through March 31, and they show no first-quarter transfers from the General Fund to the three utility and land funds. What happens next
The City’s document index currently shows the Aug. 18 agenda package, motion registry and audio recording, but no meeting minutes. Important details
The general fund’s budget column shows a planned $1.64-million annual surplus; the land fund’s budget column shows a planned $1.49-million annual deficit; sanitation shows a planned $487,700 annual deficit; and water and sewer shows a planned $2.12-million annual surplus. The water-and-sewer page is labelled “Q2 Budget Variance Report,” although it says results are “year to date up to March 31, 2026,” the same period used in the Q1 tables.
