Iqaluit marine communications may be disrupted for 24 minutes daily next week

ᓇᐃᓈᕐᓗᒍ

The Canadian Coast Guard warns that satellite interference could disrupt Iqaluit Marine Communications and Traffic Services each day from Oct. 11 to 17, between 18:02 and 18:26 UTC. Mariners should plan for the possible interruption to high-frequency, medium-frequency and VHF radio services. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ

The Coast Guard published NAVWARN NW-A-0343-26 on Oct. 8. It says annual solar decay could leave Iqaluit’s satellite-controlled and local marine communication facilities off air during the daily 24-minute window. A related NAVAREA notice describes the risk as potential interference and degradation of satellite services at Iqaluit’s remote-controlled facilities. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ

The notice affects radio communication services used by mariners, including HF, MF and VHF services. It is a warning of a possible temporary communications interruption, not a harbour closure or a restriction on vessel movements.

The warning is scheduled to remain in effect through Oct. 17. Mariners can monitor the Coast Guard’s NAVWARN service for changes or cancellation notices.

Time window: 18:02 to 18:26 UTC daily, Oct. 11–17, 2026. Cause: annual solar decay. Status: published. The Coast Guard’s main notice also names facilities in Churchill, Resolute, Cambridge Bay, Inuvik, Hay River, Enterprise and Yellowknife, but the NAVAREA notice specifically identifies Iqaluit MCTS remote-controlled facilities. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ
