Statistics Canada released its August Consumer Price Index on Sept. 14. Iqaluit’s all-items index was 150.6 in August, unchanged from July and up from 145.6 a year earlier. That equals a 3.4% annual increase.

The release is the newest official measure of broad price change available for Iqaluit. It indicates that the prices in Statistics Canada’s local consumer basket remained level over the month but were higher than a year ago. The index is a measure of average price movement, not a record of every household’s actual costs.

Statistics Canada’s next monthly Consumer Price Index release is expected in October and will provide Iqaluit’s September reading.

Statistics Canada publishes CPI data for Iqaluit rather than a territory-wide Nunavut index. The August annual increase in Iqaluit, 3.4%, was above the Canada-wide 3.0% rate. The source table reports the all-items index for Iqaluit but does not provide a local breakdown in this release for groceries, rent, fuel or other spending categories.
