ICC chairship moves to Canada as Aluki Kotierk begins four-year term
The Inuit Circumpolar Council’s General Assembly concluded in Iqaluit on July 25 with Aluki Kotierk elected chair for 2026–30, transferring the organization’s rotating international chairship from Kalaallit Nunaat to Canada. Delegates also adopted an Iqaluit Declaration intended to guide ICC’s work, though ICC has not publicly linked the declaration text.
What happened
ICC says its 15th General Assembly brought delegates from Canada, Alaska, Kalaallit Nunaat and Chukotka to Iqaluit from July 22 to 25. The assembly elected Aluki Kotierk as international chair, approved a new Executive Council and adopted the Iqaluit Declaration. ICC describes the declaration as its mandate for the 2026–30 term. Why it matters
The chairship gives a Nunavut-based Inuk leader a central role in coordinating ICC’s international advocacy for the next four years. ICC represents Inuit interests in forums including the Arctic Council, United Nations and International Maritime Organization, making the leadership transition relevant to Arctic policy, shipping, environmental stewardship and Inuit rights.
What happens next
ICC says its incoming leadership will implement priorities in the Iqaluit Declaration through 2030. The practical commitments, deadlines and any assigned responsibilities cannot yet be independently assessed because the declaration itself was not linked or published with the July 25 release. ICC says the next General Assembly is planned for Nome, Alaska, in 2030.
Important details
Kotierk previously served as Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. president from 2016 to 2024, according to ICC. Herb Nakimayak was separately elected ICC Canada president for the same 2026–30 term on July 21. ICC Canada said at that time that no candidate had been received for vice-president, international affairs, and that it would announce a new nomination period and election date.
