The work concerns areas of soil affected by petroleum hydrocarbons where excavation is not practical because of nearby buildings or pipelines, or because excavation could create embankment-stability and erosion risks. Phytoremediation uses plants and related soil processes to help break down contaminants.

The tender describes a potential lower-energy alternative to digging up contaminated soil at a very remote Nunavut site. The department says the contractor would implement, monitor and assess the approach. The work could run until March 31, 2029, if a contract is awarded.
