CRTC extends deadline for input on Indigenous broadband funding stream
The CRTC has extended the deadline to comment on a proposed Indigenous stream of its Broadband Fund to Dec. 1, 2026. The consultation could shape how Indigenous-led projects seek support for high-speed internet and cellphone infrastructure, including in Nunavut.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission extended the intervention deadline in Telecom Notice of Consultation CRTC 2026-47 from Sept. 18 to Dec. 1, 2026. It also moved the deadline for replies from Dec. 18, 2026, to March 2, 2027. The CRTC said Indigenous organizations, communities, governments and others had shown significant interest, and that more time would support meaningful participation. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

The proposed funding stream is intended to reduce barriers for Indigenous applicants seeking Broadband Fund support. The CRTC is asking about matters including application rules, Indigenous ownership and control, reporting requirements, upfront funding, training and whether ongoing operating costs should be eligible. These issues can matter in remote communities where building and maintaining internet or wireless service is costly. The consultation is not a funding call, project approval or announcement of money for a specific Nunavut community. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

Interested people and organizations can file an intervention by Dec. 1, 2026. The CRTC says submissions must be received by 5 p.m. Vancouver time, or 8 p.m. in Gatineau, on the deadline date. The commission plans to post a draft policy for further comment before making a final decision; no date for that step has been announced. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗
