Canada, Nunavut finalize $155.4M infrastructure agreements; separate deal targets 750 homes
Canada and Nunavut finalized Build Communities Strong Fund agreements worth $155.4 million: $81.3 million over 10 years for housing- and post-secondary-related infrastructure and $74.1 million over three years for health infrastructure. The July 23 release also confirms a separate Build Canada Homes agreement worth up to $480 million in combined federal and territorial contributions, targeting at least 750 new homes across Nunavut. What happened
The federal and territorial governments finalized the infrastructure agreements on July 23. Nunavut is also slated to receive $18.7 million in 2026–27 under the fund’s Community stream for local priorities such as water systems, transportation networks and community facilities. Why it matters
The infrastructure funding is intended to support housing-enabling works, post-secondary priorities and health infrastructure over multi-year periods. Separately, the Build Canada Homes agreement sets a territory-wide housing-delivery target of at least 750 units: 425 public-housing units, 150 affordable units, 150 supportive units and 25 units to be built by Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. What happens next
Canada says an additional 120 modular units are planned for delivery through the 2026 sealift. Governments and delivery partners still need to identify projects, allocate homes among communities and complete construction. Important details
The $155.4 million is finalized infrastructure funding, not the same pot as the Build Canada Homes agreement. The housing agreement includes up to $250 million from Build Canada Homes and up to $230 million from the Government of Nunavut, for a total project value of at least $480 million.
