Premier John Main announced Nov. 2 that Brian Koonoo had resigned from Cabinet for personal reasons. Koonoo had held the Culture and Heritage, Environment, Languages and Energy portfolios. Main assigned those responsibilities on an acting basis to two sitting Cabinet ministers: Annie Tattuinee takes Culture and Heritage and Languages, while Cecile Nelvana Lyall takes Environment and Energy. The Government of Nunavut’s current Cabinet page lists those acting portfolio assignments. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗ ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

The change shifts responsibility for several departments and files without adding new Cabinet members. Tattuinee continues as minister of Human Resources, while Lyall remains responsible for the Nunavut Housing Corporation. Their acting assignments mean both ministers are carrying additional responsibilities until the Premier announces a longer-term arrangement. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

The Premier’s Nov. 2 statement did not say whether Koonoo will remain an MLA, name a permanent replacement, or set a date for a Cabinet shuffle. The acting assignments are already reflected on the Government of Nunavut’s Cabinet page. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗

This is a completed Cabinet change, not a proposed shuffle. Koonoo resigned from Executive Council; the announcement does not say he resigned his elected seat. The official release gives no further details beyond saying the resignation was for personal reasons. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ↗
