Baker Lake boil-water advisory lifted after five weeks

ᓇᐃᓈᕐᓗᒍ

Baker Lake residents no longer need to boil tap water before drinking, cooking or brushing their teeth. Nunavut’s Health Department lifted the advisory on Nov. 3, five weeks after it was issued because of high turbidity — cloudy water. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ

The Government of Nunavut says the boil-water advisory for Baker Lake was lifted Tuesday, Nov. 3. The advisory began Sept. 29 as a safety measure because of high turbidity in the water supply. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ

The change restores normal use of tap water for consumption. During the advisory, residents had been told to bring water used for drinking, preparing food or infant formula, making ice, washing produce and brushing teeth to a rolling boil for at least one minute.

No further action or continuing water-use restriction was included in the Nov. 3 lifting notice. Residents should follow any future local public-health notices if conditions change.

The advisory lasted from Sept. 29 to Nov. 3, a total of 35 days. The Government of Nunavut’s general drinking-water registry still displayed Baker Lake as under advisory when checked Nov. 4, but the newer community-specific Health Department notice says it has been lifted. The dated lifting notice is the more current record. ᓇᑭᓐᖔᖅᓯᒪᓂᖏᑦ
