Sanikiluaq do-not-consume water advisory remains in effect, Nunavut says

In brief

Sanikiluaq remains under a do-not-consume drinking-water advisory, the Government of Nunavut confirmed Sept. 17. Water for drinking, cooking, infant formula, ice, washing produce and brushing teeth must come from the reverse-osmosis units installed in households or from store-bought water. Source

What happened

The Department of Health listed Sanikiluaq among the communities with drinking-water advisories still in effect as of Sept. 17, 2026. The current territorial drinking-water page identifies the advisory as a do-not-consume order dating to June 24, 2016 and says it is due to high salinity in the source water. Source

Why it matters

This is a daily health and household-service issue. Residents cannot use regular tap water for consumption purposes and must rely on the household reverse-osmosis units or purchased water instead.

What happens next

A March 12 Government of Nunavut notice said the advisory would remain until the new water-treatment plant is operating and the water is found safe to consume. The government has not published an expected operating date, a construction update or a timeline for lifting the advisory in the Sept. 17 reminder. Source

Important details

The Sept. 17 territorial reminder confirms the advisory remains active but does not repeat its original issue date or give a lifting date. The newer government drinking-water page lists the June 24, 2016 notice date and high salinity as the reason. This is a do-not-consume advisory, not a boil-water advisory: boiling tap water is not presented as the approved alternative for drinking or food preparation.
