Nunavut remains Canada’s youngest territory, new estimates show
Statistics Canada estimates that 29.5% of Nunavut residents were younger than 15 on July 1, 2026, while 5.5% were 65 or older. The territory’s median age was 27.6 years, lower than every province and territory. Source↗
What happened
Statistics Canada released updated annual population estimates by age and gender on Sept. 23. Nunavut’s estimated share of residents aged 0 to 14 fell 0.7 percentage points from a year earlier, while the share aged 65 and older rose 0.3 points. The median age increased by 0.4 years. Source↗
Why it matters
The figures provide a current territory-wide baseline for planning services used by children, youth and older adults, including schools, housing and health supports. They do not measure service demand or establish whether existing services are sufficient.
What happens next
Statistics Canada may revise demographic estimates as new administrative and census information becomes available. These are estimates, not final 2026 Census results.
Important details
