APTN News reported on Aug. 5 that the Auditor General of Canada was planning a performance audit of Nunavut drinking-water management. The Auditor General’s current work plan independently confirms an item titled “Management of Drinking Water - Nunavut” under territorial audits, with more information to come and anticipated publication in 2027. The planned audit could give Nunavut MLAs and residents an independent review of how the territorial government manages drinking-water responsibilities. It is relevant to communities dealing with drinking-water advisories, but it does not itself change advisory status, provide funding or require immediate action.

Watch for the Auditor General to publish the audit’s objective, audited entities, scope and timetable. Any findings, recommendations and government responses would come only when the report is tabled, currently anticipated in 2027.

A performance audit assesses how government manages activities, responsibilities and resources; it does not decide whether a policy is worthwhile. The Auditor General says the audited entity receives an audit-plan summary after the planning phase, and final reports to Nunavut are tabled in the Legislative Assembly. Source↗
