Iqaluit Indigenous youth can apply for five-day policy school with $1,000 honorarium
Indigenous Youth Roots is accepting applications until Sept. 14, 2026 for its Northern Policy School in Iqaluit. The free Oct. 19–23 program is for Indigenous youth aged 18 to 29 who are located in Iqaluit; organizers say participants who complete the five-day program will receive a $1,000 honorarium. The Nunavut Impact Review Board is accepting public comments on Royal Roads University’s proposed Namminiqsurniq Nunavut Ecosystems Field Course, connected to a six-month learning program for Nunavut Inuit employees at Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada’s Iqaluit regional office. The Canadian Coast Guard has issued a NAVWARN confirming four shoals of unknown depth in Shipping Safety Control Zone 16. The Canadian Armed Forces says Operation NANOOK-NUNAKPUT is underway in and around Resolute Bay until Sept. 25, involving more than 350 personnel including Canadian Rangers. Canada to impose new U.S. counter-tariffs Sept. 8; Nunavut-specific effects not yet confirmed
Canada says new counter-tariffs of 15%, 25% and 50% on selected U.S.-origin goods will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Sept. 8. The measures cover imports valued at $27.6 billion and include steel, aluminum, dairy, appliances, fish and seafood, furniture, clothing, electronics, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper. Nunavut accepts major increase in Baffin Island caribou harvest, from 550 to 6,000 tags
The Government of Nunavut has accepted the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board’s decision to raise the Baffin Island caribou total allowable harvest to 6,000 tags for the July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027 season, up from 550. The Canadian Coast Guard has issued a navigation warning that the Iqaluit Marine Communications and Traffic Services receive service on VHF radio Channel 16 at Churchill, Manitoba, has been off air since Aug. 23. Iqaluit consumer prices rose 3.4% over the year to July, Statistics Canada says
Statistics Canada’s July Consumer Price Index release puts Iqaluit’s all-items CPI at 150.6, up 0.9% from June and 3.4% from July 2025. The annual increase was above Canada’s 3.0% rate. This is an Iqaluit measure, not a territorial Nunavut CPI.
Canada, Nunavut finalize $155.4M infrastructure agreements; separate deal targets 750 homes
Canada and Nunavut finalized Build Communities Strong Fund agreements worth $155.4 million: $81.3 million over 10 years for housing- and post-secondary-related infrastructure and $74.1 million over three years for health infrastructure. The July 23 release also confirms a separate Build Canada Homes agreement worth up to $480 million in combined federal and territorial contributions, targeting at least 750 new homes across Nunavut.
