Iqaluit committee to consider Astro Hill apartments and Sivumugiaq road application
Iqaluit’s Governance and Priorities Committee of the Whole is scheduled to consider proposed approvals for Nunastar Properties’ Astro Hill Sky I and Sky II apartment development at 352 and 354, as well as a separate road-survey application on Sivumugiaq Street submitted by Qikiqtaaluk Corporation on behalf of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association. Nunavut francophone school board approves push for full management autonomy
The Commission scolaire francophone du Nunavut approved a May 20 resolution to pursue full management autonomy and negotiate a transfer of governance, human-resources and financial responsibilities with the Government of Nunavut. Rainfall warning forecasts 30–50 mm for Iqaluit starting Tuesday night
Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a Yellow rainfall warning for Iqaluit at 4:17 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, Aug. 18. It forecasts 30 to 50 millimetres of rain from Tuesday night through Wednesday, tapering Thursday, with sudden reductions in visibility possible. Source↗
KFC moves into Northmart as Pizza Hut service ends at Nipisa Street site
KFC has moved from the former KFC/Pizza Hut operation at 159 Nipisa Street into Iqaluit’s main Northmart store beside Tim Hortons. The separate Pizza Hut offering has ended, while Northmart plans to sell pizzas through its bakery and food counter. The change keeps KFC available but removes a branded pizza takeout option in a city with limited choices. Northmart’s online store locator still lists both KFC and Pizza Hut among Iqaluit services, suggesting the page has not yet been updated. Source↗
Embrace Life Council opens registration for Sept. 17 Iqaluit Polar Dip
Embrace Life Council is registering adults for its first Embrace Life Polar Dip, planned for Apex Beach in Iqaluit on Thursday, Sept. 17. The suicide-prevention organization says the pilot event is part of Embrace Life Week and will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; advance registration closes Sept. 13. Source↗

Desgagnés Transarctik’s schedule, updated Friday morning, lists the Claude A. Desgagnés arriving in Iqaluit on Aug. 17 and departing Aug. 20. The carrier also lists planned Iqaluit calls from Oct. 17 to 23 and Nov. 1 to 3; cargo for those later voyages has a listed terminal cut-off of Sept. 22. Source↗
Pirurvik opens applications for 2026–27 Inuktut certificate and instructor programs
Pirurvik Institute is accepting applications for its 2026–27 Aurniarvik Certificate and Aqqusiurvik Inuktut Instructor Diploma. Aurniarvik is scheduled to begin Aug. 24, while Pirurvik’s current upcoming-programs listing gives Aug. 31 as the diploma start date; a separate diploma page still says Aug. 17, so applicants should confirm that date directly with Pirurvik.

Qajuqturvik says Iqaluit community-meal demand rose sharply in June and July
Qajuqturvik Community Food Centre says it served an average of 481 meals a day in June and July, and reports a 35 per cent summer increase in demand for its daily meals. The figures point to increased pressure on a core free-meal service, but the organization has not published its underlying counts or comparison method.
Iqaluit extends municipal fleet garage RFP deadline to Aug. 26
The City of Iqaluit has extended the bid deadline for a proposed design-build municipal fleet storage garage from Aug. 5 to Aug. 26 at 3 p.m. EST. The proposed heated facility would store up to 10 heavy water and sewer utility trucks, but it is not an awarded contract and its construction remains conditional on future planning amendments. NIRB opens public screening for proposed Iqaluit hydro project
The Nunavut Impact Review Board lists public commenting as in progress from Aug. 12 for the proposed Iqaluit Nukkiksautiit Project, a 30-megawatt hydroelectric proposal about 60 kilometres from Iqaluit. This is a screening stage, not approval to build. Source↗
ICC chairship moves to Canada as Aluki Kotierk begins four-year term
The Inuit Circumpolar Council’s General Assembly concluded in Iqaluit on July 25 with Aluki Kotierk elected chair for 2026–30, transferring the organization’s rotating international chairship from Kalaallit Nunaat to Canada. Delegates also adopted an Iqaluit Declaration intended to guide ICC’s work, though ICC has not publicly linked the declaration text.
Iqaluit pool scheduled to reopen Sunday, but August programming remains reduced
The City of Iqaluit says the Aquatic Centre pool is scheduled to reopen Sunday, Aug. 16, after annual maintenance. Aquafit will not run for the rest of August and the 6:30–8 a.m. lane swim is cancelled because of staffing shortages; the City also warns that swim schedules or capacity may change on short notice. CMHC reports Iqaluit rental vacancy held at 0.3% in 2025 despite modest supply growth
CMHC’s Northern Housing Report says Iqaluit had only six vacant rental units out of nearly 2,000 in 2025, leaving its vacancy rate at 0.3% for a third consecutive year. The report expects private-market supply to grow in 2026 because units are under construction, but says that growth will not materially close the North’s per-capita housing-start gap. Source↗

Plateau paving starts Aug. 13 as Pingua and Qaqqaliaq residents prepare for access changes
Road preparation and paving on parts of Pingua Street and Qaqqaliaq Street is scheduled to begin Thursday, Aug. 13. The City of Iqaluit expects granular work through Aug. 22, paving Aug. 23–25 and final drainage work Sept. 1–3, subject to weather.
Plateau remains under emergency water shutdown and boil-water advisory, City says
The City of Iqaluit issued an August 12 notice saying an emergency water shutdown and precautionary boil-water advisory are in effect for Plateau. The City said crews were addressing an urgent water-infrastructure issue and expected to restore water around 6 p.m., but the notice does not identify affected streets or addresses.
Iqaluit’s published tax-arrears total rises to $5.3M; City has not announced a tax-sale plan
The City of Iqaluit’s newly published 2025 property-tax arrears list reports $5.30 million owing on properties with more than $500 in arrears, up from $4.54 million on the previous year’s list. Nunavut law allows the City to offer eligible properties or registered leasehold interests for public auction after they remain on an arrears list past Dec. 31, but the City’s July notice announces payment-plan help—not an auction, deadline or collection initiative.
Iqaluit tender notices include visitor-centre work, snow clearing and air charter services
The Government of Nunavut’s tender portal lists three active Iqaluit-related procurement notices: envelope replacement at the Unikaarvik Visitor Centre, as-and-when snow clearing for the Nunavut Housing Corporation, and an Iqaluit–Arviat return air charter. These are solicitations for bids, not contract awards.
Coast Guard’s Arctic season keeps Iqaluit traffic-monitoring centre operating through sealift period
The Canadian Coast Guard says its Iqaluit Marine Communications and Traffic Services centre opened for the 2026 navigation season on May 15 and is operating during the Arctic sealift period. The Coast Guard has deployed or scheduled nine icebreakers for Arctic work from June to November, including support for community resupply, search and rescue, navigation and pollution-response duties.
NTI approves $6.8M youth plan, $18.7M housing-interest distribution; questions remain on Arctic Fresh housing role
Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. says its board approved a $6.8-million youth wellness plan, distribution of $18.7 million in interest earned on federal Inuit housing funds, and transitional-housing work in four communities. NTI says Arctic Fresh Ltd. was selected through a competitive process, but it has not published the project contract, value, unit counts or schedule. Public records identify related Arctic Fresh entities as Inuit firms with previous government contracts and grants, but do not establish an ownership or governance tie to NTI or the regional Inuit associations.
Nunavut tables draft devolution laws as Iqaluit prepares for a larger territorial role in land and water decisions
Nunavut has released four draft laws needed for its planned April 1, 2027 takeover of Crown-land, inland-water and resource-management responsibilities from Canada. The package is not yet before the Legislative Assembly as bills, but it shows how the territory intends to keep existing licences, boards and regulatory processes operating through the transition. For Iqaluit, the immediate change is government restructuring and staffing—not a confirmed change to city services or a known round of job cuts.
Iqaluit approves Tundra Ridge land deal, with Inuit homeownership and affordability targets still to be tested
Iqaluit council approved a land-disposal agreement with Tom Fitzgerald Construction on July 28 for private development in the Tundra Ridge expansion. The decision advances two undeveloped residential parcels toward subdivision, roads and homes, but the City has not publicly released the signed agreement, final lot count, construction schedule, servicing confirmation or final sale prices.
Iqaluit water-licence review puts long-term supply and growth capacity under scrutiny
Iqaluit’s application to renew and amend its municipal water licence is now in the Nunavut Water Board’s technical-review process. The City is seeking authority connected to a long-term raw-water supply and storage project intended to reduce reliance on seasonal pumping and strengthen supply for existing residents and future growth. No permanent licence amendment or infrastructure approval has yet been issued.
