Iqaluit hydro project files new response as NIRB screening remains active
Nunavut Nukkiksautiit Corporation filed a response on Oct. 8 to a Nunavut Impact Review Board information request about its proposed Iqaluit hydroelectric project. The filing is part of an active environmental screening, not approval to build. NIRB had also asked the federal minister for more time to complete the screening, and the registry does not show a decision on that request.
Nunavut’s latest bird-flu notice calls Frobisher Bay findings suspected, despite earlier confirmed notice
The Government of Nunavut’s newest avian-influenza advisory says four bird species found dead near Frobisher Bay and Iqaluit between Sept. 4 and 11 remain suspected cases pending confirmatory tests. That conflicts with a Sept. 29 government notice that described a confirmed case in four species harvested in the same area and time period. Until the government clarifies the records, residents should not treat the local finding as newly or conclusively confirmed. Source↗
Frobisher Bay has no marine warning Friday, but flurries may cut visibility to one mile
Environment Canada’s Friday morning forecast shows no marine watches or warnings for Frobisher Bay, after a freezing-spray warning was in effect Thursday. Mariners can still expect flurries, visibility as low as one mile, northwest winds rising to 20 knots Saturday evening and one-metre seas. The ice forecast lists bergy water. Source↗
Iqaluit targets May 2027 for new General Plan and zoning bylaw
Iqaluit staff say draft replacement planning rules are expected to be published for council and public comment in December, with a public hearing planned for March and final adoption targeted for May 2027. CMHC says Iqaluit rental housing remained exceptionally tight as public-housing waitlist topped 400 households
CMHC’s July 29 Northern Housing Report says Iqaluit’s rental market remained exceptionally tight in 2025. It reports that the public-housing waitlist exceeded 400 households in February 2025, even as 36 public-housing units were vacant and some units needed major repairs. The report expects more private-market homes to be completed in 2026, but says this is unlikely to close the North’s per-person housing-supply gap.
Aqqusariaq recovery centre enters final construction and operating phase
Nunavut says Aqqusariaq, a planned 24-bed addictions and trauma recovery centre in Iqaluit, is nearing substantial completion. The centre is not open yet, and the Health Department is still finalizing a funding agreement with a new Inuit-led not-for-profit established by Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated to operate it.
Nunavut skills competition set for Iqaluit April 22–23, 2027; registration to open in January
Skills Canada Nunavut says its next Territorial Skills Competition will be held in Iqaluit on April 22 and 23, 2027. Registration is expected to open in January 2027, but the organization has not yet posted registration forms, a closing deadline or 2027-specific eligibility rules. Source↗

Ottawa’s Iqaluit NORAD plan is large—but not yet approved for construction
A federal notice outlines a potentially massive expansion of military infrastructure beside Iqaluit Airport, but Ottawa has not issued a request for proposals, approved a public project budget or guaranteed construction. AWG Arena to open for ice season Saturday as Sivumugiaq Street weekend closures continue

Environment Canada has a freezing spray warning in effect for Frobisher Bay. Northwest winds are forecast to increase to 30 knots near noon Thursday, with seas building to two to three metres and visibility dropping to one mile or less in flurries.
Iqaluit warns crosswalk signals remain disabled at Queen Elizabeth Way intersection
The City of Iqaluit says the pedestrian crosswalk signals at Queen Elizabeth Way and Niaqunngusiariaq Road are disabled after being damaged in a vehicle accident. Drivers and people crossing the road are being asked to use extra caution.
Inuit Heritage Trust names general contractor for planned Iqaluit heritage centre
Inuit Heritage Trust appointed Arctic Fresh Projects, partnered with Penn-co Construction, as general contractor for the planned Nunavut Inuit Heritage Centre in Iqaluit. The May 6 appointment starts construction planning work, but it does not mean building has started: final funding still needs to be secured.
Drilling and blasting planned near Road to Nowhere for proposed STEAM Hub

Iqaluit approves agreement for up to $108.7M in federal housing-support infrastructure funding
Iqaluit council unanimously approved a contribution agreement allowing the City to finalize up to $108,721,940.25 in federal funding for water and wastewater infrastructure intended to support housing growth. The project includes utilidor work, wastewater upgrades, new trucked-service vehicles and a heated fleet-storage building. Source↗

The Canadian Coast Guard warns that satellite interference could disrupt Iqaluit Marine Communications and Traffic Services each day from Oct. 11 to 17, between 18:02 and 18:26 UTC. Iqaluit household hazardous-waste drop-off set for Saturday
Iqaluit residents can bring household hazardous waste to the Airbase Garage at Four Corners on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The City will accept items including batteries, paint, cleaners, fuels, pharmaceuticals and electronic waste, but not used oil, tires, propane tanks or ammunition. Anuri Street to close Saturday for culvert work and road repairs
Anuri Street is scheduled to close to vehicle traffic on Saturday, Oct. 10, while the City of Iqaluit installs a culvert and carries out road repairs. The City says local and emergency access will be maintained, but drivers and pedestrians should follow posted detours and use caution. Source↗
Iqaluit students ask City for more year-round youth recreation space
Two Iqaluit students asked the City to create year-round turf or other free, low-barrier indoor activity space for youth. City staff said the Arctic Winter Games Arena turf was removed for its regular switch to the ice season, not for a business conference. Nunavut now calls Frobisher Bay bird-flu findings suspected pending testing
The Government of Nunavut has changed its description of bird findings near Frobisher Bay from confirmed avian influenza to suspected cases pending confirmatory test results. The public-health advice for hunters, egg harvesters and others handling wild birds remains the same.
CMHC says Iqaluit rental vacancy held near zero in 2025 as Nunavut housing supply lagged
CMHC’s Northern Housing Report says Iqaluit had only six vacant rental units out of nearly 2,000 in 2025, for a 0.3% vacancy rate. The report says Nunavut’s new residential construction investment was 63% of its 2021 level, even though social housing made up about 93% of that investment. Source↗

Iqaluit prices were flat in August but 3.4% higher than a year earlier
Statistics Canada’s latest available Consumer Price Index data for Iqaluit show the overall price index was unchanged from July to August 2026, but was 3.4% higher than in August 2025. The data measure Iqaluit, not Nunavut as a whole, and do not show which local spending categories drove the change.
QIA filing flags possible major impacts from proposed Iqaluit hydro project
A Qikiqtani Inuit Association filing in the Nunavut Impact Review Board’s screening of the proposed Iqaluit Nukkiksautiit hydro project says the project could have significant adverse effects on the environment and Inuit livelihoods. The project remains under review and has not been approved for construction.

Inuit Heritage Trust has appointed Arctic Fresh Projects, working with Penn-co Construction, as general contractor for the planned Nunavut Inuit Heritage Centre in Iqaluit. Iqaluit Centennial Library cuts hours temporarily because of staff shortage
The Iqaluit Centennial Library is temporarily open from 1 to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday because of a staff shortage. The Government of Nunavut has not set a date for regular hours to return.
