Indigenous Youth Roots is accepting applications until Sept. 14, 2026 for its Northern Policy School in Iqaluit. The free Oct. 19–23 program is for Indigenous youth aged 18 to 29 who are located in Iqaluit; organizers say participants who complete the five-day program will receive a $1,000 honorarium. The Nunavut Impact Review Board is accepting public comments on Royal Roads University’s proposed Namminiqsurniq Nunavut Ecosystems Field Course, connected to a six-month learning program for Nunavut Inuit employees at Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada’s Iqaluit regional office. Iqaluit consumer prices rose 3.4% over the year to July, Statistics Canada says
Statistics Canada’s July Consumer Price Index release puts Iqaluit’s all-items CPI at 150.6, up 0.9% from June and 3.4% from July 2025. The annual increase was above Canada’s 3.0% rate. This is an Iqaluit measure, not a territorial Nunavut CPI.
Niaqunngusiariaq Road to close in two stages Tuesday for water and sewer work
Niaqunngusiariaq Road is scheduled to close from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, with the closure moving at about 1 p.m. from Kangiq and Iniq Drive to the Saputi Road intersection. Iqaluit water-licence review moves through technical stage; long-term reservoir still awaits Water Board decision
The City of Iqaluit took its renewal-and-amendment application for water licence 3AM-IQA1626 to a Nunavut Water Board technical meeting and pre-hearing conference on Aug. 11–12. The application seeks to continue municipal water, wastewater and waste-system operations while adding permanent water-supply works at the Apex River and Lake Qikiqtalik. Iqaluit sets Sept. 5 Mass Registration to help families find winter activities
The City of Iqaluit says its 2026 Mass Registration will run Saturday, Sept. 5, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Iqaluit Curling Rink. The annual event gives families one place to meet local sports, non-profit and community groups and sign up for the winter season. Organizations that want a table are asked to email the City with their name and contact information.
Permafrost survey to bring brief delays and noise in Iqaluit from Aug. 25 to Sept. 4
Tetra Tech Canada is scheduled to conduct a non-invasive permafrost ground survey in public areas of Iqaluit from Aug. 25 to Sept. 4. The City says people may see workers, equipment pulled along roads and sledgehammer data collection; minor traffic delays are possible, but no lane closures are planned. CMHC: New Iqaluit mortgage payment equalled 56% of typical household income in 2025
CMHC’s Northern Housing Report estimates that a new mortgage on an average-priced Iqaluit home required 56% of average household income in 2025, up from 41% in 2021. Its comparable estimate for Indigenous households was 70%, up from 51%. Iqaluit council to consider leases for Tundra Ridge expansion lots
Iqaluit council is scheduled to give first and second readings on Aug. 25 to By-law 1037, which would authorize 99-year City leases to Tom Fitzgerald Construction for two pre-subdivision lots tied to the Tundra Ridge expansion. Each draft lease lists $1 plus applicable GST as total rent, requires construction to start within 36 months and finish within 10 years, and allows the City to terminate for missed construction obligations. CMHC’s July 29 Northern Housing Report adds detail beyond its previously covered 0.3% Iqaluit rental-vacancy finding: it says Nunavut Housing Corporation public housing made up about one-fifth of the city’s rental stock, while 36 public-housing units were vacant and the waitlist exceeded 400 households in February 2025. Iqaluit staff seek Ulu Lane easement for water and sewer work tied to Sivumugiaq subdivision
City staff asked Iqaluit’s Governance and Priorities Committee of the Whole on Aug. 18 to recommend approval of a survey sketch for a three-metre municipal utility easement along parts of Ulu Lane. The proposed easement over Lots 868 and 869 would support water and sewer servicing improvements connected to the Sivumugiaq subdivision. KFC moves into Northmart as Pizza Hut service ends at Nipisa Street site
KFC has moved from the former KFC/Pizza Hut operation at 159 Nipisa Street into Iqaluit’s main Northmart store beside Tim Hortons. The separate Pizza Hut offering has ended, while Northmart plans to sell pizzas through its bakery and food counter. The change keeps KFC available but removes a branded pizza takeout option in a city with limited choices.
