Uquutaq says new Iqaluit low-barrier shelter is expected to open in January
Uquutaq Society says its new Ullivik low-barrier shelter at 158 Nipisa St. is expected to open in January 2027. The facility is planned to add 44 shelter beds, 13 transitional-housing units and a daytime warming centre. The January date remains an expectation, not a confirmed opening or intake date.
What happened
Uquutaq Society’s executive director told Nunatsiaq News that the new three-storey Ullivik facility is expected to open in January. Public records support the project’s planned scale: the Nunavut Housing Corporation listed a 44-bed Uquutaq low-barrier adult shelter and 13-bed transitional-housing project as in progress, while the project architect describes 44 shelter rooms, a warming centre, kitchen, dining space and 13 transitional units. Why it matters
Iqaluit’s current Uquutaq low-barrier shelter is listed at 17 beds. If Ullivik opens as expected, it would substantially increase low-barrier overnight capacity and add daytime indoor space and transitional units for people moving toward longer-term housing. The new building is not yet operating, so residents should not assume its beds or warming-centre services are available now. Source↗
What happens next
Uquutaq Society has not publicly posted a firm opening day, referral or intake process, operating hours, eligibility rules, or a staffing plan for Ullivik. Atiilu News Desk should monitor for a direct Uquutaq, Government of Nunavut or City of Iqaluit announcement before reporting that the facility has opened.
Important details
The project architect lists 44 shelter rooms for men and women, including single-night emergency beds, 13 transitional-housing units, a warming centre, kitchen and dining area. The Nunavut Housing Corporation’s 2024–25 annual report lists the 44-bed shelter and 13-bed transitional project as in progress, funded by the corporation, Family Services and other sources. Federal records separately confirm up to $971,257 for Uquutaq’s commercial kitchen and training space, but that is not evidence for the full project cost or opening date. Source↗ Source↗
