Sakku says Arviat modular housing factory has opened
Sakku Investments Corporation says Sakku Innovative Building Solutions, a modular-housing factory in Arviat, has had its grand opening. The company says the Inuit-owned facility will build homes designed for Arctic conditions and provide local jobs and construction training. Sakku has not published a production schedule, staffing total or evidence that factory-built homes have now been delivered. Source↗
What happened
Sakku Investments Corporation announced the grand opening of Sakku Innovative Building Solutions, known as SIBS, in Arviat. Sakku describes it as Nunavut’s first modular housing factory and says the facility is Inuit-owned. The announcement marks a change from earlier public records that described the factory as under construction and expected to begin operating in spring 2026. Source↗
Why it matters
A factory that can build housing modules indoors could extend construction work beyond the short outdoor building season and support housing construction across the Kivalliq. Federal funding records previously described a goal of about 40 full-time operational jobs and production of about 40 homes a year, but those are expected results and capacity estimates, not confirmed current staffing or delivered homes. What happens next
The practical test will be whether SIBS publishes orders, production figures, staffing and apprenticeship numbers, and when completed modules are shipped and occupied. Sakku’s opening announcement does not provide a first production run, housing-unit delivery schedule, customer list or confirmed number of employees.
Important details
Canada announced up to $6 million in CanNor support for the facility in February 2025. Sakku Properties Ltd. was also identified by Canada as having provided $13 million of its own funding at that time. Those earlier records said the factory was expected to produce roughly 40 homes annually and support 40 full-time jobs once operating; neither figure should be treated as a confirmed current result.
