What happened

The Government of Nunavut issued the advisory on Sept. 8, 2026, as a safety measure during utilidor repairs. Its current drinking-water advisory list continues to show Rankin Inlet under a boil-water advisory. The territory also listed it as active in a Sept. 17 reminder. Source Source

Why it matters

Residents need to boil water for at least one full minute before using it for drinking, infant formula, ice, juice, cooking, washing fruits and vegetables, or brushing teeth. The advisory does not apply to every household use.

What happens next

The Department of Health says it will notify the community when the advisory is lifted. Atiilu News Desk should recheck the Government of Nunavut newsroom and current drinking-water advisory page immediately before publication for a lifting notice.

Important details

This is an active public-health precaution, not a permanent water-quality finding. The government says the reason is repair work on the utilidor. Rankin Inlet’s advisory is dated Sept. 8, 2026, and remains on the Government of Nunavut’s current advisory table.
