Pangnirtung K–3 classes using full Quliuraqtuq bilingual education model this school year
Pangnirtung is listed to use the full Quliuraqtuq bilingual education model in kindergarten to Grade 3 during the 2026–27 school year. Under the model, 85 to 90 per cent of K–3 instruction is in Inuktut, with English introduced from Grades 4 to 6. Source↗
What happened
The Government of Nunavut’s current community-by-community education table lists Pangnirtung as using the full Quliuraqtuq model for kindergarten through Grade 3 in 2026–27. The department says District Education Authorities select their community’s model based on local priorities, consultation feedback, teaching capacity and student learning needs. Source↗
Why it matters
The listing gives Pangnirtung families a clear description of the intended language balance in early grades. The full Quliuraqtuq model provides a heavy Inuktut focus: 85 to 90 per cent of instruction in K–3, followed by a gradual introduction of English from Grades 4 to 6. Source↗
What happens next
The new selection applies only to K–3 in 2026–27. The department says one additional grade will move under the selected model in each following year as the new curriculum is introduced. Other grades remain under their existing models for now, and middle and high schools do not yet need to select a model or level. Source↗
Important details
This is an implemented 2026–27 school-year model listing, not a new funding announcement or a change for every grade at once. The department says bilingual-model levels reflect a school’s capacity to provide Inuktut instruction, including educator availability and training. Pangnirtung has both Alookie School and Attagoyuk Illisavik. Source↗
