Nunavut announces added FANS benefits for Inuit post-secondary students

In brief

The Government of Nunavut says it is introducing a Nunavut Inuit Study Grant benefit through its student-aid program this autumn for Inuit students enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement. The announcement lists support for items such as holiday travel, tutoring, mandatory exam fees, furniture and health and wellness, but does not give benefit amounts or a specific start date. Source

What happened

Nunavut’s Education Department announced Sept. 3 that the Financial Assistance for Nunavut Students program, known as FANS, would add a Nunavut Inuit Study Grant benefit this autumn. The department says the benefit is for Inuit students enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement. Source

The department lists transitional allowance, holiday travel, school-supply and living-situation support, furniture, mandatory exam fees, tutoring, recreation or activity support, health and wellness support, and a transitional support person among the benefits. It did not publish dollar amounts, limits, or a separate application form for each item. Source

Why it matters

The change could reduce some costs that eligible Inuit students face while starting, continuing or returning from post-secondary studies. But students cannot tell from the public announcement how much support they may receive for each item, or whether every listed benefit is available in every circumstance.

FANS says applicants generally must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, have lived in Nunavut for at least 12 continuous months before acceptance into an approved program, and enrol in a program lasting at least 12 weeks at Nunavut Arctic College or another designated post-secondary institution. The FANS page says applications are due eight weeks before a program ends. Source

What happens next

Eligible students should check directly with FANS about whether the new Inuit-specific benefits are now available, the amounts and supporting documents required. The department says it also plans further improvements, including non-financial student support, but has not set out a timeline or details for those changes. Source

Important details

The newest Education Department item found was an Oct. 6 Education Week notice. It said the department was giving each district education authority and the francophone school board $900 for Education Week events held Oct. 5 to 9. That event has ended and the notice did not provide a total cost or ongoing service change, so it is not proposed for separate coverage. Source

The FANS announcement is dated Sept. 3, 2026. The current FANS webpage still labels its detailed benefit structure as 2025–26, so it does not independently set out the amounts or operating rules for the September-announced benefits. Source
