NIRB posts screening decision report for proposed Pond Inlet water-supply facility
The Nunavut Impact Review Board posted a screening decision report Sept. 22 for a proposed new water-supply facility in Pond Inlet. The Government of Nunavut’s application proposes replacing existing water-supply infrastructure, expanding the raw-water reservoir and increasing permitted withdrawals from Salmon Creek. The filing is a regulatory decision step, not itself a water-licence amendment, construction approval or confirmation that work has started. Source↗
What happened
NIRB’s new-documents list records a Sept. 22, 2026 submission for file 26WA001: a Screening Decision Report for the renewal and amendment of Pond Inlet water licence 3BM-PON2025. The project dashboard identifies the applicant as the Government of Nunavut’s Municipal Works Division and describes a proposed new water-treatment building, treated-water storage, process-waste tank and an expanded raw-water reservoir. Why it matters
The application is tied to a long-term municipal water-supply upgrade. The project description says the replacement facility is intended to provide 20 years of capacity based on projected population growth. It proposes withdrawal limits of up to 2,051 cubic metres a day and 111,803 cubic metres a year from Salmon Creek. Source↗
What happens next
The project still requires the applicable water-licence process and other approvals. NIRB’s dashboard continued to show the file as “Active Screening” when checked, even though the decision report was listed as newly filed; the public dashboard may not yet reflect the Sept. 22 document. The proponent’s application anticipated limited civil work in late summer or fall 2026, followed by construction in 2027 and 2028 and possible commissioning around fall 2028. Source↗
