ITK board allocates $218M in federal funding for Inuit housing and conservation
Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami says its board voted to allocate $130 million for Inuit housing and more than $88 million for Inuit-led environment and nature work. The announcement does not say how much will go to Nunavut, which Inuit Treaty Organizations will receive each share, or when projects and programs will be announced. Source↗
What happened
ITK said its board made the funding-allocation decisions at meetings in Kuujjuaq on Sept. 9. The housing allocation is $130 million from the federal Urban, Rural and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy, to be provided to Inuit Treaty Organizations. ITK said the organizations will determine how to support Inuit housing, including Inuit living outside Inuit Nunangat.
The environment and nature allocation is more than $88 million. It includes $51 million for Inuit Guardians programs, about $33.3 million for Inuit-focused nature initiatives and about $4 million for the Inuit-Canada Nature Table. Source↗
Why it matters
The decision puts substantial federal money under Inuit-directed allocation processes for housing, conservation and stewardship work. Inuit Guardians programs can include local monitoring of ecological health, cultural sites and sensitive areas, as well as knowledge-sharing between Elders and youth, according to ITK. Source↗
What happens next
Inuit Treaty Organizations must decide how to distribute or use their funding shares. ITK’s announcement does not set application dates, identify Nunavut-specific projects, list recipient organizations or give delivery deadlines. The allocations are decisions by ITK’s board, not an announcement that a particular Nunavut housing or conservation project has been approved or completed.
Important details
ITK says the $130 million is part of a $780-million federal top-up to the Urban, Rural and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy, shared through distinctions-based agreements with Inuit, First Nations and Métis. ITK also says Inuit received $197 million over seven years through the strategy in 2025. The organization did not publish a regional breakdown for the new money. Source↗
