Iqaluit prices were flat in August but 3.4% higher than a year earlier
Statistics Canada’s latest available Consumer Price Index data for Iqaluit show the overall price index was unchanged from July to August 2026, but was 3.4% higher than in August 2025. The data measure Iqaluit, not Nunavut as a whole, and do not show which local spending categories drove the change.
What happened
Iqaluit’s all-items Consumer Price Index stood at 150.6 in August, unchanged from July. It was 145.6 in August 2025, a 3.4% increase over 12 months. Statistics Canada released the figures Sept. 14. Source↗
The national Consumer Price Index increased 3.0% over the same year. Iqaluit’s annual increase was therefore 0.4 percentage points higher than the national rate. Source↗
Why it matters
The figures offer a current, city-level indicator of changes in the overall cost of a fixed basket of goods and services. They do not mean every household’s costs rose by 3.4%, and they are not a full Nunavut-wide cost-of-living measure.
Statistics Canada publishes Iqaluit’s overall index, but its detailed local component tables are more limited than the national and provincial data. That means this release cannot reliably identify whether food, rent, fuel or another category was the main local driver.
What happens next
Statistics Canada says it will release Consumer Price Index data for September on Oct. 19, 2026. That release should provide the next monthly Iqaluit all-items update. Source↗
Important details
Iqaluit’s index was unchanged month to month, compared with a 0.1% national decline from July to August. The August 2026 figures are not adjusted for seasonal patterns. Statistics Canada’s underlying monthly table is 18-10-0004-01. Source↗
