Grays Bay Road and Port review remains active as Kugluktuk hunters await responses
West Kitikmeot Resources Corp. is aiming to respond by Oct. 23 to 70 questions from the Kugluktuk Angoniatit Association about the proposed Grays Bay Road and Port, Nunavut News reported Oct. 14. The deadline is a proposed response milestone in an ongoing environmental review, not approval to build the project. Source↗
What happened
The Nunavut Impact Review Board’s public registry shows West Kitikmeot Resources Corp. filed a request in September for more time to respond to information requests in the Grays Bay Road and Port review. Nunavut News reported that the company hopes to answer 70 questions from the Kugluktuk Angoniatit Association by Oct. 23. The project file remains in active review. Source↗
Why it matters
The proposed project would include a deep-water port, small-craft harbour and a 230-kilometre all-season road from Grays Bay to Jericho Station. It would be built in an area used by Inuit and wildlife, including caribou habitat. The hunters’ questions are part of the evidence that could shape the environmental review and any future conditions, but they do not decide the project on their own. Source↗
What happens next
Watch for West Kitikmeot Resources Corp.’s responses and any follow-up from the Kugluktuk Angoniatit Association, the Nunavut Impact Review Board and other review participants after Oct. 23. The review still has later steps, including a public hearing, a hearing report and ministerial decisions, before any construction approval could be considered. Source↗
Important details
The proponent describes the proposal as a port about 180 kilometres east of Kugluktuk, plus road, bridges, quarries, fuel storage, an airstrip and other operating facilities. It estimates construction would take about five years and require about 250 to 400 workers. Those are proponent estimates, not approved commitments. Source↗
