What happened
At its Sept. 24 meeting, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs adopted a proposed travel budget of $283,628.85 for up to six committee members to travel to Northern Canada in fall 2026. The committee was studying affordability challenges in Northern Canada. Nunavut MP Lori Idlout was listed as present for the meeting. Source↗
Why it matters
The committee has set aside money to take its affordability work outside Ottawa, which could create a later opportunity for Northern residents and organizations to give evidence in person. It is not funding for Nunavut housing, food, transportation or other services, and it does not yet guarantee that the committee will visit Nunavut.
What happens next
Watch for a committee travel itinerary, a notice of hearings or meeting notices naming Northern communities and witnesses. The committee held a further affordability hearing on Oct. 8 that included Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated President Gloria Uluqsi and Uquutaq Society chief executive officer Laurel McCorriston by videoconference.
Important details
The Sept. 24 minutes say the committee adopted the proposed budget; they do not identify destinations, travel dates, the final group of travellers or a community-by-community breakdown of spending. Lori Idlout remains the Member of Parliament for Nunavut and is currently listed as a member of the Indigenous and Northern Affairs Committee. This is a procedural committee decision, not a federal program approval or an announcement of money flowing to Nunavut.
