Agnico reports record Meliadine milling as Meadowbank production hit by spring runoff
Agnico Eagle says Meliadine processed a record 648,000 tonnes of ore in the second quarter, while Meadowbank production was affected by lower grades, spring runoff and heavier-than-expected June rain. The company says its 2026 Meadowbank guidance remains on track, and its previously approved Amaruq mine-life extension runs to 2030. Source↗
What happened
Agnico Eagle reported its second-quarter results on July 29, covering operations through June 30. The company says Meliadine, near Rankin Inlet, milled a record 648,000 tonnes of ore during the quarter, producing 97,516 ounces of gold. It attributes the higher throughput to strong open-pit hauling, while saying lower-than-expected grades offset the effect on gold output.
At the Meadowbank complex near Baker Lake, Agnico reported 100,165 ounces of gold production in the quarter. It says production was below plan because lower grades, challenging spring runoff conditions and more June rainfall than expected affected open-pit ore mining. The company says lower grades also reflected mine sequencing—the planned order in which material is mined.
Together, Meliadine and Meadowbank produced 197,681 ounces of gold in the quarter. Agnico says Meadowbank’s full-year 2026 production remains in line with its plan. Source↗
Why it matters
Meliadine and Meadowbank are major Kivalliq employers and economic drivers. The update shows how weather and mine sequencing can affect output even when processing capacity is strong. It also confirms that Agnico had not changed its 2026 Meadowbank outlook as of July 29.
The company separately says it approved an Amaruq mine-life extension in February 2026, moving the expected end of mine life to 2030 from 2028. Agnico’s Meadowbank complex includes the Meadowbank mill and the Amaruq open-pit and underground mines. Source↗
What happens next
Agnico had scheduled a four-day Meliadine mill-maintenance shutdown in the third quarter of 2026 and a five-day Meadowbank shutdown in the fourth quarter for mill-liner replacement and other routine work. Those were planned activities, not reports that the work had been completed.
At Hope Bay in the Kitikmeot, the company says detailed engineering was about 67 per cent complete as of June 30, while construction and mine-development work continued. Agnico says an updated prefeasibility study is planned for the end of 2026. That study is a company planning milestone, not a regulatory approval or confirmation that full production has begun.
