Iqaluit climate-hazard survey to bring drilling and excavation work from Sept. 14 to 22
Iqaluit residents may see short periods of drilling and excavation near public areas and roads from Monday, Sept. 14, to Tuesday, Sept. 22. The City says the geotechnical work will support city-wide climate-hazard mapping by improving information about ground and permafrost conditions. Source↗
City briefing says Lake Geraldine is essentially full, with about 530 days of water at current demand
Iqaluit’s Lake Geraldine reservoir held about 1.664 million cubic metres of water as of Sept. 8, according to a City briefing prepared for the Sept. 15 Governance and Priorities Committee of the Whole meeting. The City estimates that volume equals roughly 530 to 540 days of supply at early-September consumption levels, while cautioning that the estimate is not a prediction because demand, inflows and other losses can change. Iqaluit schedules Sunday water shutdown and boil-water advisory for three address areas
The City of Iqaluit has scheduled a water shutdown for Sunday, Sept. 13, from about 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at addresses 400–500, 523–588 and 1601–1992. The City says affected residences will be under a precautionary boil-water advisory once water pressure drops, until a later City notice says it has been lifted. Source↗

Iqaluit collector-road study must cost all three route options before City selects preferred alignment
A City of Iqaluit addendum requires consultants bidding on the Core Area collector-road preliminary-design study to develop and cost all three alignment options to a comparable Class 2 estimate level. Iqaluit seeks bids to build West 40 industrial subdivision
The City of Iqaluit is seeking a contractor to build the West 40 industrial subdivision. The tender calls for roads, drainage, stormwater ponds and a riverside cut-and-fill lot, with rough grading of other market lots listed as provisional work. Bids close Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. EST. Iqaluit council approves 118-unit Astro Hill apartment redevelopment
Iqaluit council unanimously approved a conditional development permit on Aug. 25 for two five-storey apartment buildings that would replace the “white row” buildings at 352 and 354 in the Core Area. City planning records list 118 proposed homes: 10 studios, 89 one-bedroom units and 19 two-bedroom units. The approval does not mean demolition or construction has begun. Source↗
NIRB opens response stage for proposed Iqaluit hydro project
The Nunavut Impact Review Board posted an “Opportunity to Address Comments” notice on Sept. 8 for the proposed Iqaluit Nukkiksautiit Project. The file remains in active screening, meaning the project has not received a screening decision or permission to build. Source↗
Arctic Winter Games Arena closes during switch from turf to ice
The Arctic Winter Games Arena is closed to public use after the City of Iqaluit removed its turf for the season. The Youth Centre and BeaverTails remain open. Iqaluit bowhead harvest shares country food across the community
Iqaluit hunters harvested a bowhead whale on Aug. 21, the community’s first such harvest since 2022. Community members gathered at the breakwater to share maktaaq and meat, while Qajuqturvik Community Food Centre also served and distributed parts of the harvest. Source↗
Iqaluit household hazardous-waste drop-off set for Saturday
Iqaluit residents can bring household hazardous waste to the Airbase Garage at Four Corners on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The City will accept items such as batteries, paint, cleaners, fuels, pharmaceuticals and electronic waste, but not used oil, tires, propane tanks, ammunition or industrial waste. Iqaluit’s permanent water-supply plan is still awaiting its key licence decision
Iqaluit’s proposed permanent reservoir and raw-water system has completed environmental screening, but it still needs its key water-licence decision. Federal reviewers are seeking clearer safeguards for fish habitat, dam safety, construction water, climate risks and monitoring.
Sivumugiaq Street closes on September weekends starting Saturday

Iqaluit’s 2026 burn permits require Dispatch calls before and after every permitted fire
Iqaluit’s current 2026 burn-permit forms require permit holders to call Fire Dispatch before lighting a permitted open-air fire and again after it is extinguished. Recreational permits allow clean, dry, untreated wood only and a maximum one-cubic-metre pile; commercial or industrial permits allow up to 27 cubic metres but prohibit garbage, plastics, treated wood and other listed materials. City-wide boil-water advisory remains in effect after Iqaluit water shutdown
The City of Iqaluit says all residents on piped water service were subject to a precautionary boil-water advisory after a city-wide water shutdown on Saturday, Sept. 5. The City’s current notices page does not list a subsequent city-wide lift notice. Residents affected by the interruption should boil water used for consumption for at least one full minute until the City announces the advisory has been lifted. Source↗
Iqaluit dog euthanized after observation period; City says investigation continues
The City of Iqaluit says a dog suspected of involvement in the Aug. 24 incident was euthanized Sept. 3 after completing a mandatory 10-day observation period directed by Public Health. The City says its investigation remains ongoing. Source↗
CMHC report finds Iqaluit housing supply still far behind demand
CMHC’s 2026 Northern Housing Report records an Iqaluit private-rental vacancy rate of 0.3% in 2025—six vacant units among nearly 2,000—for the third consecutive year. The median rent was $3,025, while public-housing waitlists exceeded 400 households as of February 2025. Source↗
Iqaluit hydro project screening comment period closes; three institutional submissions added
The Nunavut Impact Review Board’s registry now lists three September 3 comment submissions—from the Government of Nunavut, Government of Canada and Qikiqtani Inuit Association—on the proposed Iqaluit Nukkiksautiit Project. Iqaluit seeks bids to clean and inspect about 4.1 kilometres of sewer lines

NHC report lists 64 Iqaluit public-housing units completed, 48 under construction and 58 pending permits
Nunavut Housing Corporation’s June 15 progress report says 64 public-housing units had been completed in Iqaluit since the start of the 6th Assembly in 2021, while 48 public and staff housing units were under development. It lists another 58 public-housing units in planning for future delivery, but says those units remain pending municipal development-permit approvals. Source↗
