Nunavut approved $273.9M in added capital authority, largely for carried-over projects
Nunavut’s Legislative Assembly approved $273.909 million in supplementary capital spending authority on June 11. Most of the amount carries money forward from earlier capital appropriations for projects that were not finished or fully spent in 2025–26. The approval raised the territory’s 2026–27 capital appropriation to $647.126 million. Source↗
What happened
Bill 2, the Supplementary Appropriation (Capital) Act, No. 1, 2026–2027, received assent on June 11, 2026. It authorized $273.909 million in additional capital authority across 11 departments. The supporting estimates identify $123.079 million for Transportation and Infrastructure Nunavut, $72.601 million for Community Services and $39.372 million for Health as the largest departmental amounts. Why it matters
The authority covers work tied to water and wastewater systems, health facilities, schools, airports, marine infrastructure, fuel systems and community buildings across Nunavut. Examples include $16.318 million carried over for the Aqqusariaq recovery centre in Iqaluit, $7 million for replacement of the Nuvuk sewer lift, $5.5 million for Qikiqtarjuaq marine infrastructure, and $7.593 million for the Kivalliq–Baffin fibre connector. These entries authorize capital spending; they do not confirm that each project is complete, under contract or on a fixed opening date. Source↗
What happens next
Departments can use the approved authority during the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027, subject to normal project delivery, procurement and regulatory requirements. Residents should not treat the appropriation as a construction-completion notice. Future capital estimates, tenders, contracts and departmental updates will be needed to show progress on individual projects.
Important details
The supplementary document describes most listed amounts as carryovers from prior-year appropriations, with no net effect on the overall project budget. It also includes some projects treated as new for 2026–27 because they had not started, had no contractual commitment, had no previous-year spending, or had carryover requests below $50,000. The Legislative Assembly’s bill record and June 11 Hansard confirm that the $273.909-million supplementary appropriation was approved and received assent. Source↗
