Iqaluit hydro project files response as NIRB screening remains active
Nunavut Nukkiksautiit Corporation filed a response to an information request on Oct. 8 in the active environmental screening of its proposed Iqaluit Nukkiksautiit hydro project. The filing is a procedural step, not a NIRB decision or approval to build. Source↗
What happened
The Nunavut Impact Review Board registry lists a new Oct. 8 document, “NCC Response to IR,” for NIRB file 26UN010. The project dashboard still lists the proposal as an active screening. The public comment period ended Sept. 3, and the registry shows no completed screening decision. Source↗
Why it matters
The proposed project could eventually include a hydroelectric facility of up to 30 megawatts, a reservoir, about 66 kilometres of all-season road and a transmission line to Iqaluit. The response moves the regulatory record forward, but it does not settle concerns raised in earlier comments or allow construction to begin. Source↗
What happens next
NIRB must consider the information now on the record and continue its screening process. The registry also shows that NIRB requested a ministerial extension to its screening deadline on Sept. 22; it does not show an extension decision or a screening outcome as of Oct. 9. Source↗
Important details
The project is proposed for the Kuugaluk River system on Hall Peninsula. NIRB’s registry says the project remains in planning, with design details still being finalized through environmental, technical and Inuit-engagement work. The new filing is dated Oct. 8, 2026; there is no new public comment deadline posted with it. Source↗
