Three Nunavut Arctic College programs planned for Pond Inlet training centre this fall
Nunavut Arctic College and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association announced June 3 that they plan to start three programs at Pond Inlet’s new Research Training Centre in September 2026: Personal Support Worker, first-year Interpreter/Translator, and first-year Fur Production and Design. The programs remain planned, rather than confirmed as underway.
What happened
Nunavut Arctic College and QIA said the first programs for the $34-million Research Training Centre in Pond Inlet are scheduled to begin in September 2026. The announcement follows a March 5, 2025 memorandum of understanding between the organizations on post-secondary and skills training in the High Arctic.
Why it matters
The announcement identifies the first concrete courses intended for the new facility, adding local training options in care work, Inuktitut language services and fur design. It also moves the college-QIA partnership beyond its earlier agreement toward planned program delivery in Pond Inlet.
What happens next
As of August 12, neither organization’s announcement confirms that the building was completed or opened, whether these specific programs are accepting students, their start dates, available seats, admission requirements, or any Pond Inlet-specific costs. Nunavut Arctic College’s general admissions page says applications are accepted until program spaces are filled, and applicants should check program offerings and admission requirements.
Important details
QIA said in June that it was still building the facility and expected completion by July 2026. The organizations identified funding from Inuit distinctions-based federal funding, the Mary River Project Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement, CanNor and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. NAC’s general admission rules limit applications to Nunavut residents and Nunavut Land Claim Agreement beneficiaries; the college says Interpreter/Translator applicants need an approved level of Inuktitut speaking and writing skills. These general rules do not confirm the requirements for the Pond Inlet intake.
