Co-op Gold frozen chicken products recalled over undeclared egg; Nunavut included in distribution
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says two Co-op Gold frozen chicken products were distributed in Nunavut and are being recalled because egg was not declared on the label. People with an egg allergy or sensitivity should not eat the affected products, while retailers should not sell, serve or distribute them.
Nunavut expands free bassinet program to all three regions
Nunavut says expectant parents across the territory can now register during prenatal visits for a free bassinet and a newborn wellness kit. Registration is available at Qikiqtani General Hospital in Iqaluit or at local health centres. Source↗
Government’s current education table lists Arviat for full Sikusiqtuq Inuktut model in K–3
The Government of Nunavut’s current Inuktut education table lists Arviat’s kindergarten to Grade 3 classes under the full Sikusiqtuq bilingual model for the 2026–27 school year. The listing is a community-specific implementation record, while Atiilu News Desk previously reported the territory-wide Grades 2 and 3 curriculum rollout.
Igloolik boil-water advisory remains in effect two months after July notice
The Government of Nunavut’s current drinking-water advisory list continues to show Igloolik under a boil-water advisory issued July 15 because of high turbidity, meaning cloudy water. Amautiit seeks confidential input on Nunavut family-violence supports
Amautiit Nunavut Inuit Women’s Association is inviting people with lived experience of intimate-partner, domestic or family violence to complete a confidential survey about getting help through shelters, policing, evidence collection and the justice system. The survey is open online as of Sept. 14, but Amautiit has not posted a closing date, response target or timeline for reporting results. Source↗
More than 350 military personnel taking part in Resolute Bay exercise until Sept. 25
Operation NANOOK-NUNAKPUT is underway in and around Resolute Bay until Sept. 25, bringing more than 350 Canadian Armed Forces members, including Canadian Rangers, to the area. The federal government says the exercise includes air, land and maritime training, heavy-equipment movement and surveillance activities. Source↗
Pond Inlet water-supply upgrade remains in NIRB screening as new federal comments are filed
The Nunavut Impact Review Board’s registry shows the Government of Nunavut’s proposed Pond Inlet water-supply facility is still in active screening. A new comment submission from Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada was added Sept. 10, following a Transport Canada submission on Sept. 8. Sanikiluaq under wind warning as gusts could reach 90 km/h overnight
Environment Canada issued a yellow wind warning for Sanikiluaq at 3:18 p.m. EDT Wednesday, Sept. 9. Northerly wind gusts up to 90 km/h are expected overnight, with winds forecast to ease through Thursday. Nunavut teachers in Qikiqtani face Sept. 16 deadline for 2027 professional-development conference plans
The Nunavut Teachers’ Association says members in North and Central Qikiqtani, including Iqaluit and Apex, must submit an intent-to-attend form by Sept. 16 for the regional professional-development conference planned during PD Week, Feb. 15–19, 2027. The association has also moved PD funding applications to an online Connected North database and says applications requiring southern travel authorization must now be filed at least 60 days before travel. Baffin Island caribou harvest limit rises to 6,000 for 2026–27 season
The Government of Nunavut has accepted a Nunavut Wildlife Management Board decision raising the Baffin Island caribou total allowable harvest from 550 to 6,000 for the season ending June 30, 2027. Hunters still need an allocation from their local Hunters and Trappers Organization before harvesting.
Arctic Winter Games Arena closes during switch from turf to ice
The Arctic Winter Games Arena is closed to public use after the City of Iqaluit removed its turf for the season. The Youth Centre and BeaverTails remain open. The City expects ice activities to begin in mid-October and says it will update residents on ice availability, rentals and programming by the end of September. Source↗ Source↗
Iqaluit bowhead harvest shares country food across the community
Iqaluit hunters harvested a bowhead whale on Aug. 21, the community’s first such harvest since 2022. Community members gathered at the breakwater to share maktaaq and meat, while Qajuqturvik Community Food Centre also served and distributed parts of the harvest. Source↗
Iqaluit household hazardous-waste drop-off set for Saturday
Iqaluit residents can bring household hazardous waste to the Airbase Garage at Four Corners on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The City will accept items such as batteries, paint, cleaners, fuels, pharmaceuticals and electronic waste, but not used oil, tires, propane tanks, ammunition or industrial waste. The Nunavut Impact Review Board posted a screening decision report and a Nunavut Research Institute licence on Sept. 1 for file 26YN043, “Studying Long-Term Changes in Arctic Ocean Ecosystems near Qikiqtarjuaq.” The registry confirms the screening milestone and licence posting, but the decision PDF could not be directly retrieved during this check, so Atiilu News Desk has not confirmed the decision’s exact finding, terms or research schedule. Arviat RCMP seek witnesses after ATV collision; man charged with impaired operation
Arviat RCMP are asking anyone who saw an Aug. 31 collision at 3rd Avenue and 7th Street to contact police. Police say an ATV driver was injured after a collision with a pickup truck, and that a 33-year-old man was arrested and charged with impaired operation. The charge has not been tested in court.
NIRB completes screening of DFO ballast-water monitoring project at Milne Inlet
The Nunavut Impact Review Board completed screening and closed file 26YN025 on Sept. 4 for Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s proposed Milne Inlet ballast-water monitoring project. The two-year research proposal would sample ballast water from up to about 64 to 80 ships and train Inuit youth from Pond Inlet, Igloolik and Sanirajak in shipboard sampling, safety and data analysis. Environment Canada kept a Yellow rainfall warning in effect for Pond Inlet at 4:36 a.m. EDT Saturday, Sept. 5. The agency says the community recorded 50 mm of rain over the previous two days, with total rainfall of 50 to 60 mm expected as heavy rain tapers through the day. Source↗
Iqaluit’s 2026 burn permits require Dispatch calls before and after every permitted fire
Iqaluit’s current 2026 burn-permit forms require permit holders to call Fire Dispatch before lighting a permitted open-air fire and again after it is extinguished. Recreational permits allow clean, dry, untreated wood only and a maximum one-cubic-metre pile; commercial or industrial permits allow up to 27 cubic metres but prohibit garbage, plastics, treated wood and other listed materials. Iqaluit dog euthanized after observation period; City says investigation continues

Nunavut Quitline now promotes text support alongside phone service
Nunavut’s Quitline now directs people to text “NUQUITS” to 123456 as well as call 1-866-368-7848 for quitting support. The Government of Nunavut’s service page says confidential, no-cost support is available around the clock for people reducing or quitting smoking, chewing tobacco or vaping, as well as people seeking tobacco, cannabis or vaping information. Nursing regulator advises against dual licences for Nunavut nurses and employers
The College of Nurses of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut has issued guidance stating that nurses may legally hold more than one nursing licence if they meet registration requirements, but that the College does not recommend dual licensure because of role-confusion, scope-of-practice and practice-currency risks. The July 29 guidance applies in Nunavut and is not a new legislative ban. Source↗

Boil-water advisory remains in place for three Iqaluit address groups after Aug. 31 shutdown
The City of Iqaluit has not posted a notice lifting the precautionary boil-water advisory issued for 4065A-D, 4065 E-H and 4096B after a planned water shutdown on Aug. 31. Residents at those addresses should continue to boil water used for drinking, food preparation and brushing teeth for at least one full minute until the City issues a lift notice. Source↗
Arctic Bay small-craft harbour work begins; mariners asked to give 100-metre berth
Canadian Coast Guard NAVWARN NW-A-0245-26 says dredging and construction for Arctic Bay’s new small-craft harbour is scheduled daily from Aug. 30 to Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. UTC. Mariners are asked to remain 100 metres clear of the work areas; the notice says the areas will not be marked.
Nunavut’s 2026–27 education plan shifts curriculum support to Grades 2 and 3
The Government of Nunavut’s 2026–30 business plan lists instructional support for the Nunavut curriculum and related assessments in Grades 2 and 3 this school year. A public spill record lists a 200-litre petroleum-fuel release from a marine vessel in Baker Lake, reported at 6:52 a.m. on Aug. 25. The file lists the Canadian Coast Guard/Transport Canada marine-safety unit as lead agency, an unknown cause and 1,500 square metres of affected area. City says RCMP found no criminal activity in Aug. 24 animal-control incident; municipal review pending
