NTI expands monthly support for eligible Nunavut Inuit Elders
Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. has expanded its Uqqujjait Innarnut Elders Support Program to provide additional Elders with monthly payments beginning in August 2026.
What happened
Nunavut Inuit Elders born between January 1, 1949, and December 31, 1961, may apply to receive $250 per month. NTI says payments will be retroactive to April 1, 2026, and will receive an annual cost-of-living adjustment each April.
Elders already receiving monthly program payments do not need to apply again. NTI says eligible increases will be applied automatically.
New applicants can obtain forms from their local Community Liaison Officer or through NTI’s website.
Why it matters
Analysis: The expansion provides direct, recurring financial support at a time when Nunavut households continue to face high living costs. Because the benefit is retroactive, newly eligible applicants may qualify for payments covering earlier months beginning April 2026.
The program is funded from NTI’s share of mineral-resource revenues.
What happens next
Eligible Elders who are not already receiving the benefit can apply through NTI or a Community Liaison Officer.
