What happened

Iqaluit’s Consumer Price Index stood at 149.6 in September, up from 145.2 a year earlier, Statistics Canada reports. That is an annual inflation rate of 3.0 per cent. It was below Canada’s 3.1 per cent annual rate and lower than Iqaluit’s 3.4 per cent rate in August.

The Iqaluit index fell from 150.6 in August to 149.6 in September, a 0.7 per cent monthly decrease. The figures are not seasonally adjusted. Source

The Nunavut Bureau of Statistics has posted the September statistical brief as its newest CPI update. Its public summary identifies the 3.0 per cent figure as the 12-month change, meaning it compares September 2026 prices with September 2025 prices. Source

Why it matters

The CPI is the main official measure of overall price change. A 3.0 per cent annual rate means the average basket of goods and services measured for Iqaluit cost more than it did a year earlier, even though the overall index dipped during September.

Statistics Canada publishes an all-items CPI for Iqaluit, but does not provide a public Iqaluit-specific breakdown of the monthly change by major spending category in this release. National results cannot be treated as a record of what drove Iqaluit’s change.

What happens next

Statistics Canada is scheduled to release its October 2026 CPI figures on Nov. 16. That release will show whether Iqaluit’s annual rate continued to ease or rose again.
