What happened

Nunavut RCMP say their Major Crime Unit arrested Aningmiuq on Oct. 16 and charged him with second-degree murder. Police link the charge to the Oct. 6 death of Kipanik. Why it matters

The charge is the first publicly announced court action connected to the homicide investigation into Kipanik’s death. It does not establish guilt; the allegation must be decided by the court.

What happens next

RCMP say Aningmiuq’s next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 17, 2026, in Iqaluit. Police say they will release no further information while the case is before the courts.

Important details

The RCMP release was published Oct. 19, 2026. It identifies one charge under section 235(1) of the Criminal Code and says Aningmiuq was remanded in custody. The earlier RCMP homicide notice was published Oct. 14. Source
